Can I claim my apartment rent on tax return?

I go to college away from home so I need to rent an apartment off campus. I know i can claim for the rent for the dorms on campus however the dorms ran out of spots so I was forced to rent an apt. I need to file for tax returns soon and I need to know how I can do this. I gave the receipt stubs of the rent to my tax filer but he said that is not enough. Can anyone enlighten me on this situation. thanks.
