Could I use rubber cement instead of glue/water mixture paper or fabric mache?

would the fabric absorb it properly? Im thinking of using muslin if it will work for fabric mache, but I am unsure of how well it would work, should I dilude it, or what- I'm aware that usual fabric mache is done with copious amounts of fabric starch NOT glue, which is why I also included paper mache in the question in case fabric mache wouldn't be a very good idea. any help you can give is much appreciated, thanks in advance!
