What type of fabric should I use?

I'm sewing my Nana a tote bag for her birthday. I was wondering what type of fabric I should use. I need something sturdy and durable. I'm only 13 so I don't have that much money I have like $40. And this is my first time making a tote bag so I'm not so sure about which fabric to choose. Any suggestions would help! Thanks! :)
